Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) is seeking an accomplished and visionary finance leader to join our executive team as Executive Director, Finance. Reporting to the Chief Administrative and Financial Officer, this influential leadership role is responsible for advancing ALA's financial stewardship and building the financial infrastructure required to support a modern, sustainable, and high-performing organization. As a strategic partner to the executive leadership team, you will play a critical role in shaping organizational priorities and ensuring financial decisions align with ALA's mission, values, and long-term objectives. You will provide leadership across strategic finance, business advisory services, financial reporting, controllership, shared services governance, and internal audit, helping to establish the processes, controls, and governance frameworks necessary to support organizational growth and operational excellence. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the evolution of a province-wide organization while influencing decision-making at the highest levels. You will work collaboratively with senior leaders, government partners, and external stakeholders to strengthen financial accountability, support innovation, manage risk, and drive continuous improvement. Description:
The Executive Director, Finance provides strategic leadership and oversight for the organization’s financial management, reporting, assurance, and governance functions. Accountable for developing and executing the financial strategy, the role ensures effective stewardship of financial resources through planning, reporting, accountability, and control frameworks. Key responsibilities include leading corporate financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and performance reporting to support strategic and operational decision-making. The Executive Director serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, providing financial guidance, identifying risks and opportunities, and supporting effective resource allocation across the organization. The role oversees controllership functions, including financial reporting, accounting operations, compliance, internal controls, grant and contract accounting, capital and operating financial processes, and development of financial policies and standards. The Executive Director ensures financial practices align with legislative, regulatory, and organizational requirements while maintaining accountability, transparency, and sound governance. As the organization’s senior finance liaison with Health Shared Services and key partners, the Executive Director fosters strong relationships and governance structures that support organizational priorities and service delivery. The role also provides leadership for internal and external audit and enterprise risk management activities, including audit readiness, compliance monitoring, fraud oversight, assurance reviews, and evaluation of financial and operational controls.

A Bachelor or Master's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. Minimum seven years of progressive leadership experience in financial management, including experience in a senior finance leadership role. Demonstrated experience leading strategic financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and organizational performance reporting. Experience overseeing controllership functions, including financial reporting, accounting operations, internal controls, and compliance frameworks. Proven ability to provide strategic financial advice to senior executives and support complex organizational decision-making. Experience leading and developing multidisciplinary teams within a large, complex organization.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Demonstrated expertise in financial governance, risk management, and assurance functions. Experience establishing and maintaining strong internal controls, accountability frameworks, and financial policies. Proven ability to build effective relationships and collaborate with executive leaders, governing bodies, government stakeholders, and external partners. Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and change management skills. Experience leading organizational transformation, process improvement initiatives, and service modernization efforts. Demonstrated ability to balance strategic priorities with operational requirements in a dynamic environment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of advancing organizational performance through data-informed decision-making.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in healthcare, continuing care, public sector, or broader public service environments. Additional certifications such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or related professional designations. Experience overseeing audit, enterprise risk management, or shared services governance functions. Experience supporting Boards, Audit Committees, or executive governance bodies. Knowledge of Alberta's public sector and healthcare funding environment.
