Your Opportunity:

Community Pediatric Asthma Service Education Consultants provide direct, expert asthma education and spirometry to pediatric asthma patients and their families and act as a clinical and educational resource to interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. This role advances pediatric asthma knowledge, management, and standards of care across Calgary and surrounding areas. Reporting to the ACH Respiratory Therapy Unit Manager, the Education Consultant I within the Community Pediatric Asthma Services program provides patient assessment and counselling as part of the asthma education process and delivers individualized, evidence based education in face to face and virtual settings. Education is provided on a one to one basis and in settings such as classrooms or team meetings. Pediatric spirometry is performed in accordance with clinical guidelines. The incumbent works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, including the Alberta Children’s Hospital Pulmonary Function Testing Lab, Asthma Clinic, Emergency Department, Urgent Care, and ACH Inpatient Units as well as community partners and AHS zone programs. This role includes building and maintaining partnerships, acting as a resource for specialty service and community partners, identifying education opportunities, assisting with content development, supporting service evaluation, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to connect effectively with children and families, and the flexibility to work independently in a fast paced, evolving healthcare environment. The role supports clinics across all Calgary zones and surrounding communities, including Airdrie and Okotoks, and requires regular travel within the service area.

Description:

As an Education Consultant I, you will be working closely with other interdisciplinary professionals with a variety of backgrounds where you will be responsible for delivery of patient-centered education in area(s) of expertise to staff, patients (clients, residents), families and internal or external care providers. Education may be presented formally (classroom) and/or informally (one-on-one) and in a variety of settings from clinical, classroom, to hospital in-patient. This will include building partnerships with and acting as a resource to specialty services partners, community partners, and other AHS zone programs and staff. You will also provide patient assessment and counselling as part of education process, where required. You may identify education opportunities, assist in content development, analyze and evaluate services, and work with internal staff to schedule classes and identify locations. You will build new partnerships, implement new initiatives and promote your assigned program.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of recognized post-secondary program in a health or education related field. Active or eligible for registration with applicable regulatory body.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE) or Certified Asthma Educator (CAE) or the ability to complete the program within 1 year. Minimum 3 years clinical or tertiary care experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Pediatric experience in a tertiary or educational capacity. Spirometry experience with preliminary assessment. Proficiency with computers – MS Office products (Word, Excel), Teams/Zoom, electronic medical records including Connect Care, RightFax. Certified Tobacco Educator (CTE). Smoking cessation counseling. Evaluation and instructional techniques related to child and adult learning. PFT Lab experience.
