Your Opportunity:

Alberta Health Services The Section of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, invites applications for a Level III Neonatal intensive care (NICU) Clinical Assistant position. The 132 Level II and III beds in the 5 NICUs in Calgary provide comprehensive neonatal care in Southern Alberta, which has an annual birth rate of approximately 24,000. The Foothills hospital is the designated high risk perinatal centre for Southern Alberta and SE British Columbia and, is one of the largest perinatal centers in Canada with the highest admission rate. The Level III NICU at Alberta Children’s Hospital caters to complex medical and surgical neonatal conditions. Calgary is a rapidly growing cosmopolitan city with a population of over 1.2 million people and an excellent school system. Besides the rich academic environment, Calgary offers a wide array of sporting facilities and easy access to recreational parks including Banff National Park and Kananaskis Country. The Rocky Mountains with their serene beauty, provide ample opportunities to pursue winter and summer sports and leisure activities.


The Clinical Assistant - Level 3 NICU, under the supervision of a neonatologist will work 50 hours/ week inclusive of on-calls and weekends to provide comprehensive and quality clinical care to extremely preterm and neonates with complex, surgical, neuro-critical and chronic conditions admitted to the Level III NICUs at Foothills Hospital and Alberta Children’s Hospital. The duties include sharing clinical workload with staff including fellows, Nurse practitioners and residents, attending high-risk deliveries, providing antenatal consultations, assisting with transport of patients to diagnostic imaging and operating room. Proficiency in functional echocardiography is an advantage. Other responsibilities include knowledge of unit practices and guidelines to ensure consistency of care, excellent communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary team members and specialists, education of junior learners and participating in quality improvement initiatives and continuing medical education activities of the section.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have completed residency training in Pediatrics and received certification in Pediatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or equivalent. In addition, candidates must have successfully completed Fellowship in RCPSC accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship program. In addition, the successful candidate must have passed the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE Part I) and, be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. NRP certification is required. Unless exempt, candidates must have achieved the required score in the academic version of IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
