Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a degree in public relations, communications or journalism, and 10 years of experience in communications and strategic planning, including five years of experience in a senior management role with an organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity. A combination of educational qualifications and experience may be considered. Healthcare experience an asset. Bringing exceptional diplomacy skills, the successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in all facets of strategic communications, including media relations, crisis management, government relations, internal communications, and strategic web and online communications.


Additional Required Qualifications:

The Chief Communications Officer must be an effective communicator with strong diplomacy and organizational skills, with a client-focused orientation. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker who considers long-term goals while assessing options and implications. This person will have a strong commitment to providing long-term quality services and achieving organizational goals within a large and diverse unionized organization. In addition, the successful candidate will have a record of achievement as a leader, including improving service delivery, leading transformational change, and creating innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. AHS is looking for an individual with ability and experience in fostering partnerships and achieving organizational goals within a large, diverse organization. This includes a positive track record of fostering a climate of cooperation among, and build solid relationships with, public agencies, government, boards, committees, and other partners. The successful candidate will have demonstrated capability and comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching and teaching; and with inspiring teams and building confidence in others. In addition, the individual must have the ability to manage diverse human, financial and physical resources within a complex environment. Lastly, the Chief Communications Officer will show a demonstrated clear pattern of ongoing professional and personal development.


Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate Degree preferred. Professional accreditation with Canadian Public Relations Society or the International Association of Business Communicators is preferred. Previous leadership within a large, complex organization, in a healthcare organization is an asset. Experience communicating, engaging, and building relationships with Indigenous leaders and Indigenous communities, including an understanding of how colonial practices and policies contribute to historical inequities, is desirable.
