Your Opportunity:

This position offers an opportunity to work within a new state of the art healthcare facility in High Prairie, Alberta. Opened in 2017, the facility has 30 acute care beds, obstetrics and surgical programs, emergency and outpatient departments, lab, DI, pharmacy and co-located Primary Care, Public Health, Indigenous Health, Addiction and Mental Health and Allied Health Services. JB Wood Continuing Care Centre attached to health complex has 67 beds. The opportunity exists for the right candidate to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the patients and staff. High Prairie, in northern Alberta’s Big Lakes County is known as the “Gateway to the Mighty Peace Country”. With a population of 2,600 people, and a trading area of more than 17,000, there is an abundance of beautiful open plains, rich farmland, and thriving agriculture, forestry, oil and gas, and service industries. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.


Reporting to the Site Manager, the Care Manager performs the leadership role in acute care settings at the High Prairie Health Complex - Inpatient Department, Emergency Department, Outpatient Department and Operating Room. This position is accountable for providing the direction, team leadership and organization over the activities in these four departments while supporting the vision and mission statements of AHS. This position is responsible and accountable for making front line unit-level decisions and having direct leadership responsibility towards health care of Albertans. Coordinates and provides leadership in the daily operation of the patient care by effective communication and ethical decisions. Contributes to formulation of policies and helping develop programs and ensures strong commitment to high quality of work, supervises workflow daily and improves flow as needed. Ensures proper deployment of man power to provide the most effective and efficient delivery of service/care to patient, recruits and selects staff for hiring, provides ongoing performance feedback and coaching including appraisals to support ROPs and protocols/policies. Changes and updates schedules as needed. Knowledgeable with the union contracts and applies them and collaborates with Site Manager to seek solutions to issues that may come up. Monitors expenditures and identifies causes of negative variance and is able to correct them while collaborating with Site Manager to meet targets. Promotes an environment that fosters quality improvement and a culture safety by application of best practice standards and guidelines. Serves as a role model in support of the vision and mission of AHS; supports new modified approaches, practices and processes. Works collaboratively with the Site Manager and other managers in the building to achieve goals and targets.

Required Qualifications:

Active registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Successful leadership experience of at least 1 year. Able to adjust to the pace demanded of work. Acute Care/ER experience of no less than 5 years.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Understands scheduling. Understands Union contracts and has strong clinical skills. Good communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Has More OB experience or is willing to finish More Ob modules. OR/OBS experience an asset.
