Description:
Reporting to the Manager of Respiratory Therapy, the Assistant Manager provides frontline operational and people leadership within the Respiratory Therapy program and Pediatric Sleep Laboratory at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. This role is responsible for the direct supervision, coaching, and performance management of Respiratory Therapists and Allied Heath staff, ensuring safe, high-quality, and patient- and family-centered respiratory care. The Assistant Manager supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of day-to-day clinical operations, including staff recruitment, scheduling, resource allocation, and issue resolution related to staffing, patient care, and service delivery. This position plays a key role in the implementation of departmental objectives, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based practice standards. Working collaboratively with the Respiratory Therapy leadership team, clinical programs, educators, and interdisciplinary partners, the Assistant Manager facilitates effective communication, promotes collaboration, and supports change-management initiatives across service areas. The role also contributes to financial stewardship through monitoring expenditures and identifying variances, and to risk management by promoting a culture of safety, supporting incident reporting, and addressing operational risks. As a first point of contact for staff, the Assistant Manager provides mentoring, guidance, and leadership in complex, fast-paced clinical environments, supporting both staff engagement and optimal patient outcomes.

Degree or diploma in a related healthcare field, with a minimum of five years of relevant experience in healthcare delivery or management. They must demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to integrate clinical excellence into daily operations. Optimism, enthusiasm, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement and patient- and family-centered care are essential. Proficiency with computer systems, along with excellent communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, analytical thinking, change management, organizational, and project management skills, is required. A solid understanding of the Health Professions Act, related legislation, and professional standards of practice is also necessary. A combination of education, skills, and experience may be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:Basic Life Support Certification through Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Preferred Qualifications:Current knowledge of clinical practices in respiratory therapy and sleep lab services, graduation from a recognized School of Respiratory Therapy or a related healthcare program, and previous supervisory or management experience. Additional assets include completion of leadership courses or certifications.
