Your Opportunity:

Seasonal - Assistant Head Nurse – Stollery Pediatric Surge Capacity The position is part of the Stollery’s Seasonal Part Time Positions (SPTP), a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in pediatric care while enjoying extended scheduled breaks. SPTP employees fulfill an annual commitment of 87 shifts, worked within a compressed 8-month period in a 12-month cycle, with flexibility to adjust the work period +/- two months in subsequent years. This combines the stability of a regular position with the benefits of extended time off. As an AHN, you provide front-line leadership, clinical support, and coordinate high-quality, family-centered care. Collaborating with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team, the role is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care. Practicing to full scope as defined by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), the AHN supports clinical mentorship, resource management, staff development, and quality improvement initiatives. In collaboration with the Stollery team, the AHN supports patient flow through effective resource allocation, timely discharge planning, and prioritizing patient safety, care continuity, and appropriate use of inpatient capacity. The AHN is central in multidisciplinary discharge planning for complex patients, promoting collaborative, patient- and family-centered decisions. This role supports the Pediatric Inpatient Programs, including surge beds and inpatient units (4C, 4D, 4E3, 4E4, & 5G4), serving patients from birth to age 18 with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. All scheduled hours of this position fall within a compressed work period in accordance with the Letter of Understanding #7 of the Collective Agreement between AHS and UNA. Note: There are two positions available for this posting.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience with pediatric patients with tracheostomies, peritoneal dialysis, and medical fragility. Excellent written and verbal communication. Successfully pass the Stollery PEARS course (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization Course). Successfully pass the Stollery Medication Administration exam (pass 90%). Charge nurse training and minimum 2 years experience within the charge nurse role. Minimum of 2 years of acute pediatric experience as an RN within the last 5 years. Must be proficient in connect care and MS office suit. Demonstrated strength in clinical nursing, education, and mentorship of staff. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement initiatives, patient flow, and appropriate resource allocation. Seasonal - Assistant Head Nurse – Stollery Pediatric Surge Capacity

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated initiative, accountability, problem-solving, organizational skills, and effective time management. Strong decision-making, assessment, and critical thinking skills. Ability to adapt and work within a fast-paced, and time-sensitive environment with competing responsibilities. Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a busy, demanding environment with multiple competing priorities. Previous experience in an AHN or leadership role is considered an asset.
