Assistant Head Nurse
Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Site Manager, the Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for the day-to-day coordinating patient care activities in the nursing unit. The Assistant Head Nurse is also responsible for assisting the Site Manager with planning, organizing, supervising, directing and evaluating the provision of care and programs on the nursing unit. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:To coordinate the provision of care on the nursing unit, ensuring residents receive safe and professional care and to promote a seamless continuum of care for residents. Function as patient advocate. Assesses patients’ needs regularly, provides direct patient care as required. Liaisons with the physicians as required. Ensures that physician orders are processed and carried out. Reviews resident care plans regularly with nursing staff and makes changes as necessary. Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to coordinate and prioritize patient care. Supervises nursing staff, assigns and delegates patient care and other duties. Encourages team development and working relationships, fostering an interdisciplinary team environment, building on and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders that focus on patient care excellence. Communicates regularly and identifies issues requiring follow-up by Site Manager, providing supporting documentation as necessary. Collaboration with Site Manager, assist with performance evaluation and monitoring of staff, identifying areas for staff development and identify and organize ongoing education requirements for staff based on identified needs of the unit. Collaboration with Educators and Site Manager, promotes and facilitates the professional development and orientation of staff. Participates in quality improvement, utilization and risk management activities.
Preferred Qualifications:Ability to function independently as well as on a team; high level of initiative and interpersonal skills, accountability and follow-through/outcomes. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Evidence of maturity, diplomacy and tact. Ability to organize time and resources effectively. Ability to be flexible in response to changed situations. Demonstrates sound problem solving and decision-making skills.
