Located in the South Zone the Trauma Analyst provides trauma data and information in response to queries from clients across the organization (e.g., Trauma Coordinator, Alberta Trauma Epidemiologist, Trauma Medical Director, and Regional Leadership).
Description:
The analyst collaborates with local and provincial trauma teams, HIM, local injury prevention programs, and tertiary leadership to establish and maintain a reliable data collection system. The Analyst consults with clients to understand and define their requests, applies appropriate methodologies, interprets information, completes analyses, presents findings in the requested format, and provides recommendations. The data and information support operational and business planning for the SZ trauma team. The Trauma Analyst coordinates, collects, analyzes, and reports information required for maintaining the Trauma registry (e.g., database management, data entry, data quality verification, chart reviews, and data abstraction). The Analyst advises on research initiatives, contributing to the improvement of the trauma team's capacity, quality, and processes. They collaborate with the tertiary trauma data analyst, provincial trauma epidemiologist, SZ Leadership team, HIM, local injury prevention programs, and tertiary leadership to support data for provincial reporting on injury and death rates. The analyst maintains a report card on injury control initiatives and costs for the region. The Analyst works with multiple data types (e.g., Trauma Registry, Meditech, AHS DIMR Data Repository) and performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor-level education with a strong quantitative component in a related field, e.g., community health sciences, health economics, biomedical statistics, epidemiology, quality assurance, or several years of equivalent experience. Minimum two years related experience in a healthcare environment. Minimum three years’ experience working with spreadsheets, databases and tools for querying, integrating, analyzing, interpreting, reporting and disseminating data. Minimum three years’ experience in the application of information technology, database design and information management. Must have Oracle SQL or other comparable database query and report writing experience. Working knowledge of ICD9_CM, ICD10_CM, AIS, ISS and TRISS methodology. Experience working with hospital records and data abstraction.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Proficiency in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills to produce reports that go to clients at different levels within the organization and with different skills and expertise. Experience in cleaning, linking, creating, modifying and analyzing datasets in a statistical or database-management software package. Excellent interpersonal relations and demonstrated ability to work with others effectively in teams. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio and Access) and the ability to become proficient with new software packages. Must abide by the highest standards of confidentiality and have a sound understanding of the principles within Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, as well as the Health Information Act. Experience with macros, stored procedures and statistical software applications an asset. Knowledge and ability to produce a variety of descriptive statistics. Broad understanding of health systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in injury coding using AIS and ISS scoring systems an asset.
