Your Opportunity:

The Northgate Adult Community Services has an exciting opportunity for a skilled and enthusiastic Addiction Counsellor (AC). The AC will address the three streams of service including addiction, mental health and concurrent disorders. Job responsibilities include the provision of intake, assessment, and treatment services, individual, family and referral and follow up for clients.. Additionally, the AC may be required to facilitate or co-facilitate psycho-educational, support, experiential and process groups. Consultation with families as well as community professionals is essential in order to facilitate treatment and the aftercare process. Good knowledge of community resources is an asset. The successful candidate will have well developed counselling approaches, have experience working with the adult population, be a contributing member of a collaborative team, and have advanced verbal and communication skills. The successful candidate will be working from a strength based and recovery oriented approach. The role requires a demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team to plan, organize and prioritize work and to consult with clinical and administrative supervisors as needed. There is also the opportunity to liaise with clients from the satellite ODP clinic located at Northgate.


As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a bachelor's degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor's degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.

Additional Required Qualifications:

A minimum of two years counseling experience working with individuals with addiction and mental health concerns in a community setting is required. Knowledge of trauma informed care is an asset. The successful candidate will have well developed counselling approaches, including Motivational Interviewing and have a strong understanding of the Transtheoretical Model of Change. Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support. Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training. Non-violent Crisis Intervention training.

Preferred Qualifications:

Proficient in the use of eClinician. A Bachelor's or Master's degree related to the social sciences with registration in a professional regulatory body preferred.
