You’re logical, investigative, and detail-oriented – just the kind of person we need at Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) for the role of Medical Laboratory Assistant– Core Chemistry. Core Chemistry is a fast-paced area where multi-tasking is critical. You will process, organize and distribute specimens for laboratory testing and investigation. You are responsible for minor equipment maintenance, preparing specimens for storage or for transport to other facilities and retrieval of clinical samples. You will be responsible for receiving, preparing, allocating and distributing supplies to all of Alberta Precision Labs. Other duties include but not limited to are small equipment calibration/verification, maintaining wash up room and reagent room, Urinalysis, stocking of supplies, data entry and handling of first and second trimester requisitions, samples and results. The incumbent will be in contact with other health care staff, Purchasing team, couriers, vendors and other hospitals and health care facilities regarding samples, reagents and supplies. Operate and performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory equipment. You readily learn, adapt, and become competent in operating new and upgraded analytical equipment and working with upgraded computer software programs. Candidate may also assist other departments and may have a rotation in Wash up and Reagent room. The Lab assistant will provide support to the safety Staff as needed. Recognize unusual or abnormal patient samples or situations and reports to appropriate individual(s). The consequential vacancy process may be used to fill any resulting vacancies.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Working within a team environment, good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities are necessary. The successful candidate must be adaptable and flexible within an environment of change and interruptions. The candidate selected will have the ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to or relay information, directions or questions in person, over the phone, or in writing in an accurate, clear and concise manner. The successful candidate must represent Alberta Precision Laboratories in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.
Preferred Qualifications:Competent in laboratory skills including data entry, specimen handling and processing. Experience with pipette calibration and verification, thermometer calibration, equipment maintenance. Familiar with SharePoint, Excel, Word and Windows applications. Experience in Clinical Laboratory environment using Epic Beaker-CP. Background in Urinalysis or related coursework is an asset.
