The Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research within CancerControl Alberta has a position open for a full-time temporary Research Associate (MSc Occupational Health) based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Our team of Research Scientists is engaged in cutting-edge population-based cancer research including etiology, molecular and genetic epidemiology, and biostatistics with a focus on modifiable lifestyle, and occupational and environmental risk factors for cancer. This unique position involves multi-institution collaborative work with the CAREX Canada team at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia. CAREX Canada is a national surveillance project that estimates the number of Canadians exposed to substances associated with cancer in workplace and community environments. The Research Associate (MSc Occupational Health) will support the project's core mandate of maintaining, enhancing, and translating the occupational exposure estimates to cancer research, practice, and policy specialists in order to help reduce the risk of cancer.

Description:

The Research Associate (MSc Occupational Health) will be supervised and supported by one of the CEPR Research Scientists (who is the co-Principal Investigator of CAREX Canada), with collaborative support of the Executive Director of CAREX Canada to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role. They will work with all CAREX staff and maintain working relationships with individuals across the project and its partners as required. The successful candidate will be responsible for a number of tasks, including but not limited to: Reviewing and cleaning occupational hygiene measurement data for analysis. Producing and updating estimates of the proportion of Canadians exposed to various carcinogens at work by using information gathered from published scientific literature, gray literature, government and industry occupational exposure measurements, as well as professional occupational hygienist opinion. Providing support in assessing exposure to various carcinogens for collaborative projects. Maintaining web-based tools such as eWORK (Tableau based) and assisting in developing future tools. Planning and implementation of pilot studies and projects within CAREX. Researching, composing, reviewing and editing carcinogen profiles for publication on CAREX website. Reviewing and revising materials as needed for presentations, website and other communications. Assisting with data visualization of CAREX materials for web, print, or presentations. Working closely with CAREX team members to create and implement work plans and reports, and meet deliverables deadlines. Grant writing and research paper writing and publication duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have obtained a Master’s degree with a focus in Occupational Health / Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent. Particular skills and knowledge base in the following areas are required: Expertise in techniques for occupational and environmental exposure data collection and analysis. Expertise in data management, manipulation and statistical analyses in STATA/SAS/R/SPSS (one of these) and Microsoft Excel (proficiency required). Ability to interpret and apply relevant occupational and environmental acts and regulations. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate research publications. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and apply problem solving skills to ensure project success. Demonstrated ability to take initiative. Highly developed time-management skills. Ability to design and manage databases. Research experience (especially in occupational hygiene). Attention to detail.

Assets: Ability to design and modify website illustrations using Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. Ability to use data visualization tools such as Tableau. An interest in, or specific training in, science communications and/or knowledge translation.
