Your Opportunity:

Central Alberta (Ponoka, Wetaskiwin and surrounding areas) has an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse – Sexual Health Nurse who is passionate about providing education, harm reduction and health promotion activities related to sexual health for individuals, families, schools and communities. In this role as the Sexual Health Nurse under the Public Health portfolio, you will support people with increasing their knowledge of how to care for themselves safely by encouraging healthy relationships, open communication and informed decision-making. This in turn will help identify choices that could adversely affect their sexual health and explore ideas, tools and options that may help them to mitigate potential risks. Your focus will be on decreasing unintended pregnancies, protecting reproductive capability, preventing sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and morbidity related to STI’s and blood-borne pathogens. In this position, you will build capacity in communities while working with diverse populations, through education to parents, teachers, and service providers, to have the knowledge, skills and comfort to talk openly about sexuality with youth and young adults. Your sound knowledge of teaching and learning theories will assist with successful knowledge translation and skill development. In this role, you will work in collaboration with other members of the Sexual Health team, monitoring trends, interpreting statistics, reviewing literature and research which will guide professional and community consultations and inform the direction of programming and resource development. In the heart of Central Alberta, Ponoka is located 54 km north of Red Deer and 95 km south of Edmonton on highway 2A. Wetaskiwin is located 70 km south of Edmonton in the heart of Central Alberta.


As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

One year within the last three years’ of Public Health experience. Experience with teaching and leading groups Experience within Sexual Health Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BN).
