Your Opportunity:

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is recruiting for a 1.0 FTE position to be filled by a Physician Assistant (PA) at the Foothills Medical Centre to work in maternity and women’s health care. Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) is a tertiary care site in Calgary for Obstetrics and Gynecology. The hospital is in Northwest Calgary and serves the corridor’s high risk obstetrical needs. This includes a level 3 NICU, a robust Antepartum ward with 24/7 Maternal Fetal Medicine coverage. FMC handles all deliveries in the corridor at gestations of less than 32 weeks. This complex and high-volume site typical manages 5000 deliveries a year and is seeing steady growth. The successful applicant will join a team of both general OBGYN and Maternal Fetal medicine specialists on our antepartum ward and labour and delivery.

Description:

The successful applicant will have a major role in the flow and care of high-risk antepartum patients and patients who are seen in our busy triage unit. This position will also involve but will not be limited to: Assessing, creating and communicating care plans for patients in maternity triage for obstetrical concerns (eg. labor assessments, antepartum complications, hypertension management, routine NST interpretation, starting inductions, performing point of care ultrasounds). Assessing, creating and communicating care plans for patients in the emergency department for complications related to pregnancy (eg. spontaneous abortions, retained products of conception, ectopic pregnancy) Performing telephone follow ups with obstetrical or postpartum patients who require assistance with blood pressure medication adjustment or who may require follow up on labs performed in triage. Assisting the high-risk obstetrical team with care of patients on postpartum. Providing teaching opportunities to the junior medical students and residents rotating through our site. Surgical assisting (depending on the candidate’s skill set). There will also be opportunity to work collaboratively on complex maternity patients who require long term hospitalization and the coordination of complex care plans.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a recognized Physician Assistant Program. Demonstration of active registration as a PA registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. BCLS certification required. Experience in Connect Care and acute care hospital settings is preferred but not required.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated skills. Competency in women’s health history and physical examination. Excellent communication skills. Family centered, trauma-informed and collaborative approach to care. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with multidisciplinary teams. Ability to learn and perform basic technical procedures in women’s health (including but not limited to speculum exam, foley catheter insertion through cervix, POCUS).
