In addition, we are guided by the advice of our Wisdom Council, a group of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Albertans who first came together in September of 2012. Our work is guided by five important areas: caring for our patients with respect and dignity, improving access to health services, treating people as unique individuals, managing addictions and mental health and staying up to date on the health of Indigenous Albertans. The Indigenous Health Program is looking for a Traditional Wellness Counselor who will be an important part of ensuring that all Indigenous Albertans receive the best possible health care. All Non-Union Exempt positions are being reviewed for possible inclusion in the AUPE General Support Services bargaining unit. If this position is impacted, the incumbent will be notified accordingly.


The Traditional Wellness Counselor will provide cultural and spiritual support in addition to intervention services for First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI). This position will coordinate cultural activities and traditional healing options for Indigenous based in the Calgary Zone. Calgary Zone is one of the five geographic zones which directs the health delivery within the province. To be successful, this Traditional Wellness Counselor will provide their expertise on FNMI, mentorship for cultural education, and facilitating awareness and linkages to other FNMI Elders and Spiritual Leaders. As a part of the Indigenous Health Program this role will also support the AHS Wisdom Council and maintain specific AHS sites for FNMI spiritual interventions and cultural support services. Required Qualifications:

Diploma or certificate in an approved health related program in a regulated profession (e.g. Social Work, LPN). Registration in good standing with applicable college or eligible for registration in respective professional body. Recognized by the Indigenous community as having accrued traditional rights to facilitate ceremonial, spiritual and/or teachings. Able to provide training and guidance in the use of traditional Indigenous approaches to wellbeing. Experience in a health care setting or in a human services field. Advanced experience/knowledge of Indigenous healing methods, culture and traditions. Knowledge of Indigenous history, worldview, perspectives, and beliefs/values. Ability to facilitate traditional Indigenous protocol, traditional medicines, and Aboriginal Healing method.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrates good written skills and use of relevant computer software.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in a health care setting or in a human services field with a focus on health preferred. Ability to speak a First Nations and/or Metis language preferred. Ability to translate Indigenous Ways of Knowing preferred.
