Your Opportunity:
As a Laboratory Assistant I, you are part of a microbiology laboratory team responsible for performing routine and specialized specimen processing while adhering to laboratory standard operating procedures and laboratory accreditation requirements. The Microbiology department operates 24/7 in order to provide quality service to acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, community physicians and regional clients from Central Alberta through remote and rural communities in Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Microbiology partners with our clients to play a key role in training, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control. The Medical Laboratory Assistant I is primarily responsible for manual and automated processes for processing all microbiology specimens accurately and efficiently including unpacking, sorting, data entry, accessioning, processing and preparing specimens for testing, transportation and storage as required. The consequential vacancy process may be used to fill any resulting vacancies.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Successful completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent. Must have experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant I in Microbiology or student practical training Medical Laboratory Assistant I within the last 2 years in Microbiology including experience with evaluation of specimen suitability for testing, specimen acceptance, and LIS data entry processes. A combination of related education and experience may be considered. Manual dexterity for manipulation of specimens. Demonstrated good computer skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications:Excellent customer service skills with both internal and external clients. Well organized and efficient. Good problem-solving skills with attention to detail. A strong team player with ability to perform duties within a group or independently, Excellent time management skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Leadership or training skills would be an asset. Experience with Epic Beaker would be an asset
