The Calgary Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Genetics Technologist I. G&G, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. This position will support the Cancer Cytogenomics Laboratory located at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. As a Clinical Genetics Technologist I, you will be responsible for routine and specialized work in pre-analytical testing, processing and analysis of patient samples for analysis of chromosome rearrangements, aneuploidy and genomic imbalances while adhering to lab safety procedures. Specific diagnostic procedures include preparation and culturing of peripheral blood and bone marrow specimens. Administrative tasks include entering results into the laboratory information system, test method evaluation, spreadsheet/ database use, equipment operations, literature review, quality control, proficiency testing, report generation, and document writing. You will require competency in tissue culture, microscopy, chromosome analysis, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), as well as molecular techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, quantification and next generation sequencing (NGS). As a Clinical Genetics Technologist (CGT) I, you will perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques according to established procedures. You will also participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS), report generation, quality control, proficiency testing, lab safety procedures, literature review, test method evaluation, and document writing. Other duties include but are not limited to maintaining lab equipment and supplies, training students and fellows/residents, participating in accreditation activities, and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.

Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics. Active or eligible for registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
Additional Required Qualifications:Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification in Clinical Genetics may be acceptable as equivalent to completion or upcoming completion of an advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics. Experience in human cytogenetic processing and analysis including proper use of ISCN nomenclature and specialized computer imaging platforms for karyotyping and FISH analysis. Experience with tissue culture techniques. Proven critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, planning, and decision-making skills. Strong attention to detail as well as superior organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties. English fluency with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:Technical knowledge of appropriate methodology and testing techniques applied in a molecular genetics/ molecular diagnostic laboratory. Two years of recent experience in a diagnostic genetic laboratory performing cytogenetic or molecular genetic testing and interpretation. Five years of experience with cancer chromosome and FISH analysis. Experience with next generation sequencing.
